Book review: The Autumn by Jan Henrik Nielsen

I'm not going to say that The Autumn is the Norwegian equivalent to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the story is much to different to be labeled that way, but I will say this its a great, dark YA dystopian filled with glimmers of hope.

The Frankfurt Book Fair ended recently and publishers from all around the world have been hard at work to sell the rights to some of their best novels to foreign publishers. According to NYT it seems like translation is foreign to American publishers, that is sad, really. There is so much great literature out there that deserves to be translated but the good thing was that the article inspired me to write this review :)

I know copies of one of my favorite YA dystopian reads from 2011, The Autumn by Jan Henrik Nielsen, went home in the suitcase of several foreign publishers. I've decided to translate my review to, hopefully, help the book on its way out in the big world.
Fride, soon to be six years old, cannot remember life outside of the isolation of their dark, moist bunker, her older sister Nanna, twelve years old, have vague memories of life outside. For five years now the sisters have lived in safety below ground with their father, they sought out a secure place when animals, nature and then humans started to wither away. The girls are bored with their daily routine, how can their father be so sure that it is still dangerous out there when they have no contact what so ever with the world above? The food supply is running short and then Nannas' and Frides' father gets sick. The family has no choice, the father has to send his two precious girls to the city in search of their old flat to find food and medicine. It is a highly dangerous journey for two young sisters, what lies beyond the next turn? Maybe their wish of life outside should have stayed merely a wish, they might wish for the boring, dark safety of their little bunker..
My thoughts:
Dystopian novels are very popular at the moment and I'm proud to say that we finally have an excellent Norwegian dystopian on our hands. I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations and that I wanted more when the book was finished. I'm not sure weather or not this is a standalone but the ending left the doors open for a potential sequel.

The Autumn
is about a dark future that feels so, so close to our own, it feels like this could very well be happening tomorrow and that is quite an accomplishment of the author to create that feeling within me I would say. It is delightfully frightening and good at the same time.

We get to see a post apocalyptic world through the eyes of two young girls, which is part of why this story made such a big impact on me. Fride is so young and has no memories of the world as we know it, her descriptions of things she sees and her questions makes you believe in her character. I have no problem believing that a person who knew nothing of our life would ask and observe like Fride did.

The world is sad and grey but the girls, especially young and naive Fride, brings the reader some hope for the survival of our human race. There is no love triangle in this book, in fact no romance at all, but the love for family has a central role in this story. The relationship between the two sisters is described in a most vivid way, so much that it feels real and made me fall head over heels for these two characters.

I only have one negative comment and that is that some of the dialog felt to short and simple but that might be conscious choice by the author due to the age of the youngest character.

Cover:
So very different from the "girl in a dress"- covers. I LOVE it! If that doesn't say dystopian than nothing does.

My rating of this book:
 - I want more books about Nanna and Fride.

Drink Deep Blog Tour, Interview and Giveaway

Clouds are brewing over Cadogan House, and recently turned vampire Merit can't tell if this is the darkness before the dawn or the calm before the storm. With the city itself in turmoil over paranormals and the state threatening to pass a paranormal registration act, times haven't been this precarious for vampires since they came out of the closet. If only they could lay low for a bit, and let the mortals calm down.

That's when the waters of Lake Michigan suddenly turn pitch black-and things really start getting ugly. Chicago's mayor insists it's nothing to worry about, but Merit knows only the darkest magic could have woven a spell powerful enough to change the very fabric of nature. She'll have to turn to friends old and new to find out who's behind this, and stop them before it's too late for vampires and humans alike.

Drink Deep is the fifth book in Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill. This is hands down my favorite vampire series, and Merit is one of the most kick-ass heroines ever. Drink Deep will be released on November 1, 2011, and I am so freakin' excited to see what will happen next. As part of the Drink Deep blog tour, I have gotten an interview with Mallory Charmichael, sorceress and Merit's best friend.

Nina: With your love of all things paranormal, were you happy to find out that you are a sorceress?
Mallory: I wouldn't exactly say "happy." I mean, I am what I am, and I guess there's no point in complaining about something I'm already shoulder-deep in, but it definitely wasn't something I handled very well. I'm woman enough to admit that.

Nina: If you could have gone back to the days before you found out about your powers, and before Merit was turned, would you?
Mallory: *Thinking* Honestly, I don't know. According to the Order, I'd already had some of my powers even when I was young, I just didn't know about them. And I wouldn't have met Catcher, which I can't even think about. But life would be simpler, wouldn't it?

Nina: How do you feel about working for the Order in the future, without much choice of your own?
Mallory: I definitely don't have the feelings Catcher has about them. He hates them, because he thinks they're naive and that they didn't handle his issues very well. They've been okay for me so far, I guess, but who knows what the future will hold. I haven't really found that the folks in charge of things are ever really all that good at it.

Nina: Can you tell us something surprising about Merit from your days as roommates?
Mallory: I guess you already know she likes chocolate? *grin* I will say she snores like a lumberjack. A giant, hulking lumberjack. But don't tell her I said that! Thanks for having me today!

Drink Deep Giveaway
We are giving away a copy of Drink Deep to one lucky reader. To enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this blog post telling us which fictional character you would like to interview and why. When reading makes you feel stupid

Have you ever read something that made you feel like a total idiot?

This probably goes without saying(cause' why else would I write this post) but recently I've read a couple of books that at times made me scratch my head and think what the .... just happened here?! Perhaps total idiot was taking it a bit too far but I sure have read things that made me feel like I might be lacking in the intelligence department. I hate it when that happens because I like to understand the things that I read. There are two different kinds of problems that has evoked this feeling in me:

1) A thing I don't understand but that Google can solve for me, that is in many ways a good thing. I like learning new things. The book and I part on good terms.

2) When the writing doesn't seem to follow logic. Thank heavens I'm not the kind to throw things around or my Kindle might have suffered for it.

I will try to explain to you with a couple of made up examples to show what I mean.

1:
I read a book about a girl who loved mathematics and naturally her love for the subject influenced her as a character. Math has never been a subject for me, I'm more a theoretical kind of girl than a practical one, so there terms that I was unsure of. That is a problem that can be fixed easily by a little research so no worries about that one, it's just a temporary feeling of stupidity.

2:
This might be that I really am a bit stupid or sometimes it can be caused by bad editing. I'm talking about the cases where 2+2 no longer equals 4 but something more like 15 instead, totally makes no sense to me at all. I've made up this very imaginative dialogue to show you what I mean:

"I just love your new sweater girl, it suits you!"
"Yeah, I just read this book about a bad romance, so you know.", girl shrugs.

Sometimes I'm willing to bet that this is a slip in the editorial process but when it occurs throughout a whole novel then I'm thinking that there is just something here that I do not understand. The next time I'm picking up a book that gives me this feeling I'm vowing to pass it along to someone smarter than me who can appreciate this kind of writing.

Have you ever read something that made you feel this way?

Why? Third book in an awesome series where I recently read the first two back to back. Can't wait for the newest saga in the Changeling world.

Book Review: Darkness Unbound by Keri Arthur

Risa Jones is as extraordinary as her heritage. Born from a lab-enhanced clone mother and an Aedh father, she can not only talk to the souls of the dying and the dead, but she can see the reapers and walk the gray fields that divide this world from the next.

They are skill she rarely uses, however, preferring to concentrate on the business she shares with her two best friends. But when her mother asks her to help the parents of a little girl locked in a coma, she reluctantly agrees. What she discovers scares the hell out of her. Because the little girl’s soul no longer resides in her body, and it wasn’t death and the reapers that took her.

Someone had ripped her soul from her flesh.

As it turns out, a creature consuming the souls of the innocent–and not so innocent–is the least of her problems. Because someone wants to rip open the gates that divided hell from earth, and Risa is a key component in their plans. And the only person standing between her and disaster is a reaper who isn’t exactly on her side.
My thoughts:
Darkness Unbound is the first book in Keri Arthur's new series, Dark Angel, which is a spin-off from her Riley Jenson Guardian series. As a huge fan of all nine books about Riley I knew this was something I had to read, even if I was a little scared of it ruining the original series for me. It did not. I should also say that having read the original series first will give you more background for Darkness Unbound, but it is not necessary.

In Darkness Unbound, Keri Arthur introduces us to new supernatural beings unlike any other I have read about. I love how Risa is still exploring her Aedh heritage and what that means for her, but that she also has a clear limit as to how she will use her powers. It can't be easy seeing reapers, always knowing when someone is about to die, yet she tries to make the best of every situation, and will never hesitate if she has the opportunity to help a person; friend or stranger. Risa is a very strong female lead, and even if she occasionally makes bad choices, I always understood why.

The plot was very well executed, and far from predictable. It was just as hard for me as it was for Risa to know who to trust, and I always love not knowing what's happening until the characters discover it themselves. The ending had me crying several times, but it was also the perfect beginning to the rest of the series.

One of my favorite things about Keri Arthur's universe is how her female characters are completely unashamed of their own sexuality. There are a couple of very adult scenes in this book, and so I would not recommend it to anyone who blushes any time sex is mentioned, but everyone else should definitely check out Darkness Unbound the first chance they get.

Cover:
It has kind of a cheesy-romance look to it, but at the same time this is exactly what I imagined Risa to look like, so I'm happy with it.
