Waiting On Wednesday: Dystopian: Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans.
Unless you have been hiding in a cave miles and miles away from all civilization since last year you've already heard of the young adult novel Level 2. Level 2 is the first installment in The Memory Chronicles and the debut novel of Lenore Appelhans. Many of you already know Lenore as the talented book blogger behind the infamous book blog called Presenting Lenore.
Also note that Lenore will be revealing the cover for Level 2 on her blog on Friday June 1st! Not many days left to wait now. I can't wait to see what it will look like.
Synopsis borrowed from Goodreads:
Since her untimely death the day before her eighteenth birthday, Felicia Ward has been trapped in Level 2, a stark white afterlife located between our world and the next. Along with her fellow prisoners, Felicia passes the endless hours downloading memories and mourning what she’s lost—family, friends, and the boy she loved, Neil.Last year Lenore spotlighted upcoming dystopian series(to be released in 2012/2013) and the last person she interviewed was herself. Check out the interview here. I'd like to quote Lenore's answer as to what it is that makes Level 2 stand out from other novels in this same genre:
Then a girl in a neighboring chamber disappears, and nobody but Felicia seems to recall she existed in the first place. Something is obviously very wrong. When Julian—a dangerously charming guy Felicia knew in life—comes to offer Felicia a way out, she learns the truth: a rebellion is brewing to overthrow the Morati, the guardians of Level 2.
Felicia is reluctant to trust Julian, but then he promises what she wants the most—to be with Neil again—if only she’ll join the rebels. Suspended between Heaven and Earth, Felicia finds herself in the center of an age-old struggle between good and evil. As memories from her life come back to haunt her, and as the Morati hunt her down, Felicia will discover it’s not just her own redemption at stake… but the salvation of all mankind.
How does your book stand out from others in the genre?
When I had the idea for LEVEL TWO and started working out the plot and themes, I was so excited because it felt to me like a very fresh spin on my favorite genre. I hope I’ve done justice to the dystopian afterlife thriller subgenre.
One of my favorite things about it is how Felicia is able to relive her memories of her life on Earth in order to help her make sense of the very stark and mysterious place that she's ended up.
I'd love to hear what you think of Level 2. Leave a comment below and let me know.
I for one can't wait to get my hands on it.
I for one can't wait to get my hands on it.
If you're one of the few who have yet to add Level 2 on your Goodreads wishlist I suggest you'll do it now. You know it'll be totally embarrassing to be the last YA book lover to discover this novel ;)
Level 2 comes out January 15th 2013 from Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers .

Joint book review: Struck by Jennifer Bosworth
Struck by Jennifer Bosworth has been one of the hottest YA spring releases for 2012, at least if you measure it by the buzz it received prior to the release date.
While Struck had a very interesting premise (+ a great cover and a stunning book trailer) and the story hocked me from the first page I'm sorry to say that the execution of the plot just didn't work for me. It felt more like the script for a movie and I believe that Struck is a story that might work a whole lot better for me on screen.
Mia was an interesting character with an intriguing ability but the writing relied too heavily upon known clichés. One of them being my biggest pet peeves at the moment; falling madly in love with a guy who wants nothing more than you lifeless in a coffin six feet under (very few authors can make me buy into this kind of start to a relationship). Also Struck is a novel where religion almost is a character in its own right. I'm not too fond of religion in my books, it can work sometimes but nine out of ten it doesn't.
There was some interesting points for discussion in Struck. I noted that the author brought up all the Americans that is living out on the streets and those who are poor in contrast to the way the politicians spends huge amounts on warfare when they have urgent issues to address domestically.
My rating:

Nina's opinion on Struck:
It’s not often that a book trailer has sold me on a book, but the trailer for Struck is completely epic, and could just as easily have been made for an awesome action movie as for a YA book. Luckily my high expectations were not only met but exceeded; this book is awesome.
Mia is such a normal teenage girl, except for the whole lightning addiction thing. The author has perfectly captured that feeling of addiction, how Mia knows it’s bad for her yet always craves more. I loved how she was trying so hard to stay away from trouble, and to keep her younger brother Parker out of it as well, which is not easy when two different cults are trying to recruit you! Mia had some trouble knowing who to trust, as Followers, Seekers and Jeremy all seem to have ulterior motives, some more clear than others, and she makes some incredibly stupid decisions, but they’re all based on her love for her family and her need to protect them.
Mia has some very interesting family dynamics going on. Her mom is slowly going crazy, locked up in her own bedroom watching The Prophet’s TV-show, refusing to face the world. Parker, her younger brother, is doing everything he can to help out, even when that means going against his sister’s orders. Despite all of that, they are still very much a family, and they’re about to test just how strong that relationship is. I also really liked Mia’s relationship to Jeremy, the one person who appears to be free from both cults. He’s truly trying to help her, to do what’s best for her as well as avoiding the final disaster, and yet he’s hiding something big.
On the surface Struck is an action packed doomsday story, but it’s got an underlying theme of religious brainwashing that I absolutely loved. One of the cults is being led by a strong figure called The Prophet, who predicted the earthquake, and who’s been converting Followers via his religious TV-show since before the catastrophe happened. It’s weird to see how fear, and especially fear of the unknown, makes people desperate enough to believe just about anything without questioning the logic in it, and for me that was far scarier than any storm could ever be.
The ending of Struck ties up the storyline nicely, but it leaves enough open to make me excited for the sequel, because we are clearly not done with Mia’s story yet. I liked Struck a lot, and I hope you will too!

Lil isn't just an average teenager. She's one of the Nephilim--the descendants of humans and angels--which gives her some serious psi skills and a mission for redemption. Just when Lil thinks she's found a balance between her normal life with human friends and her training to become a Guardian, she's warned that someone close to her will betray her. EDNAH WALTERS BIO:
I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries and fell in love with books
I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and epic adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.
I've written picture books (unpublished), contemporary and romantic suspense (under the pen name E. B. Walters), and finally YA fantasy (as Ednah Walters).
AWAKENED (2010) is the prequel to the YA series about the Nephilim, The Guardian Legacy series. BETRAYED(book # 1) is now available wherever books are sold, HUNTED (book # 2) will be released in February 2013 andFORGOTTEN (later in 2013).
My adult contemporary with or without suspense is about a west coast Irish-American family series. I've published four Fitzgerald books: SLOW BURN (April 5th 2011), MINE UNTIL DAWN (June 29th 2011), KISS ME CRAZY (Sept 25th 2011) and DANGEROUS LOVE (Jan 29th 2012)
When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children and my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in northern Utah, the setting for my YA series.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:
Just like Awakened, Betrayed has risen above all the other books in this genre. She has created such an amazing world for her Guardians & demons where good and evil are not as simple as it seems they should be. ~J. Whitus (Book Junkies) Walking On BookshelvesI just love a spunky heroine so I was excited to keep reading about Lil, the demon hunter I got to know in Awakened (book one of The Guardian Legacy series). Walters takes the story and world she built so well in Awakened and adds in an intense plot with lots of twists to make for a strong sequel.~ Kelli (I'd So Rather Be Reading)

Summer Reading from Julie Kenner/J.K. Beck!
Now let’s get down to talking books! First and foremost, today, Tuesday May 29, is the release date for WHEN PASSION LIES by J.K. Beck, book 4 of the Shadow Keepers series. Yes, after a long break the series is back, with three, count ‘em, three books! (WHEN DARKNESS HUNGERS and WHEN TEMPTATION rules follow in July and August!). (Order WHEN PASSION LIES from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Random House, or your favorite bookseller.)
OMG, this is so the way I love series books to come. Bam, bam, bam three in a row. What more can a reader ask for! I just ordered mine and I can't wait!
Tiberius is a vampire dedicated to protecting his kind—and the secrets of the shadow world. Now, as his quest to become head of the Alliance draws within reach, a shattering new threat puts him to the ultimate test. It’s a nightmare of grim proportions: a dark plot to bring about the mass extermination of human and shadow alike. And it forces Tiberius to turn to the woman he loved and lost, the lover he still desires but doesn’t trust.
FBI agent Alexis Martin knows that vampires exist—because one of them killed her sister. Assigned to investigate a series of bizarre homicides in Los Angeles, Alexis believes the murders are the work of rogue vampires—perhaps even the monster responsible for her sister’s death. Now she finally has a chance for retribution. Even better, Alexis receives unexpected help from a sexy stranger as hungry for rogue blood as she is.
Serge is a centuries-old bad boy who stays off the grid—keeping his secrets, his hunger, and his heart safe from exposure. A new breed of vampire that feeds off other shadowers, Serge finds sweet torture in Alexis’s arms. Loving her is a chance to be free from the hiding, the loneliness, the secrecy. But the truth about what he is, and what he’s done, may banish him to the dark confines of his own private hell—and destroy the beginnings of their love.
Half human, half daemon, Ryan Doyle is a driving force for justice. As an agent for the Preternatural Enforcement Coalition, he’s investigating murders linked to a Los Angeles fringe group bent on exposing the shadow world to humanity. He is a master of self-control, keeping his deepest hungers hidden beneath a veneer of cool professionalism. Until he crosses paths with sinfully sweet Andy Tarrent, a gutsy reporter who makes him crave all the pleasures he’s denied himself for centuries.
Tracking a band of conspiracy theorists eager to spill blood, Andy has uncovered the story of her career. Brooding, mysterious Ryan is an enigma—but their dance of seduction is hotter than any fantasy. As they race to stop mass murder on the streets, Andy knows that Ryan is holding back, keeping secrets. But getting close to Ryan means opening the door to a world that will challenge her deepest beliefs—including what it means to truly surrender to love.

As a horrifying new weapon of mass destruction is about to be unleashed, Tiberius and Caris harness the power of their immortal and passionate love. But will it be enough to battle devastating odds and a ruthless enemy with the ambition to destroy them all?

Richard A. Knaak’s Cuchulainn (The Hound).
ATLANTA, GA – May, 18th 2013 - Sea Lion Books announces the graphic novel publication of the legendary Cuchulainn in a new graphic novel series from bestselling author Richard A. Knaak --THE HEART OF THE HOUND.
At birth he was called Setanta, yet he is known to all as Cuchulainn…the Hound of Cullan. It was a name he had earned as a youth, slaying the savage, gargantuan pet of the Lord Cullan.
His bravery had earned him much admiration, many friends and many enemies. King Conchobar had been a good friend and mentor to his long-lost nephew, having him trained by the greatest warriors, then commanding him to marry the beautiful Emer, daughter of the Lord Forgal.
It is a future many would envy…so long as they remained unaware of the other future also pursuing the young Hound of Cullan. A future rapidly overtaking him…THE HEART OF THE HOUND.
In an modern yet ancient telling of a Celtic legend, author Richard A. Knaak brings to life the greatest hero in Irish literature. Cuchulainn was a legendary fighter, welding his spear Gae-Bhlog, a spear almost as iconic as Arthur's Excalibur. He single-handedly defended Ireland against an invasion by overwhelming forces that rode with dark magic.
His fury in battle was called riastrad and those who were witness to it, never forgot the fearsomeness of it.
A story told for hundreds of years, THE HEART OF THE HOUND is finding new life and new tales in the twenty-first century in the talented hands of Richard A. Knaak and art by Carlo Rispoli. "We are extremely fortunate that this Celtic icon is being brought to life by the talented Richard A. Knaak. His ability to world create will reveal the legend of Cuchulainn to a new generation." said Derek Ruiz, Executive Vice President and Publisher of Sea Lion Books. HEART OF THE HOUND is the first book in a series of three graphic novels scheduled to be released online as a free web comic on the Sea Lion Books website: ( www.sealionbooks.com ) beginning in early 2013. |

It is not uncommon for writers to have a keenly developed interest in their fellow man. For them to spend hours looking at people, listening to them, discovering all the little synchronicities and ambiguities that make them unique.
But I don’t have that.
In fact, I can’t stand people. And there’s so freaking many of them. They’re like huge, overblown ants, crawling all over the world and getting in my way.
So it came as a big surprise to me when I met a fellow human who didn’t immediately piss me off. Who didn’t make me want to take a ten minute detour just to avoid eye-contact, or feel that disgusting little disturbance in the air that inevitably occurs when people come close.
This is rare.
This man, let's call him John, has a very interesting day job. One I didn’t even know existed. Apparently, he’s the guy who designs the colors for the insides of shoes.
Bet you didn’t know that. Bet you never realized there was a guy out there who spent the better part of a year deciding on the exact shade of tan to use for the inside of the shoes you are wearing right now. Or that weird off-white color in your sneakers that you wouldn’t call egg-shell – not just because it’s not exactly egg-shell, but mostly because you never actually noticed the color of the inside of your sneakers.
And that’s also part of John’s brilliance; the way he manages to let his work blend into the background. John is at the top of his profession and he’s one of the few people in the world who can create that all important balance between the inside color of your shoe and:
1. The outside color of your shoe (obviously designed by hippies and no good marketing managers without a subtle bone in their bodies.)
2. The odd lighting conditions created inside your shoe by the shape of the nose and the height of the heel.
3. The mood a specific shoe-shape induces.
This balance is needed to create a perfect blend of unobtrusiveness. Now, I would normally interject a few words here about what the world must’ve been like before John began this valiant work. I’d give examples of the kind of accidents that occurred when people became distracted by the color of the insides of their shoes as they were putting them on. How it destroyed their lives and the lives of the loved ones they fell on. But I won’t do this. I don’t have the data at hand to back it up and, to be honest, I think it would be reaching a bit. I’m sure things weren’t that bad. We survived somehow and we’ll probably continue to survive long after John retires. Nevertheless, this doesn’t make John any less interesting.

Masters of the Veil BookBlast -$100 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway
Life can't get much better for Sam Lock. Popular, good-looking, and with a future as a professional football player. every guy at Stanton High School wishes he were Sam. That is, until his championship football game, when Sam accidentally links with an ancient source of energy known as the Veil and reveals his potential to become a powerful sorcerer. Sam is whisked off to Atlas Crown, a community of sorcerers who utilize the Veil as a part of everyday life. Once there, he trains beside a mute boy who speaks through music, an eternal sage who's the eyes and ears of the Veil, and a beautiful girl who's pretty sure Sam's an idiot. As it becomes clear Sam's meant for power magic-the most feared and misunderstood form of sorcery-people beyond Atlas Crown learn of his dangerous potential. An exiled group of power sorcerers are eager to recruit Sam, believing that he is destined to help them achieve their long-held goal. If they succeed, they could bring about the downfall of not only Atlas Crown. but all humankind.
About this author
After gaining eagle-eye vision, abs that could grate cheese, and a talent for imagining things (including his cheese-grating abs), he wrote his first novel and began his epic battle against the formidable business jargon. He continues to fight the good fight by playing saxophone and writing YA fantasy, forever hoping his Veil trilogy will help inspire others to join his cause.
Interview with Daniel Cohen
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I graduated with a degree in business management but I’m trying my best not to use it. Obviously I love writing, but really I just love books in general.
What inspired you to write about magic and sorcerers?
Harry Potter.
And others.
But mostly Harry Potter.
Like most everyone else, I am obsessed with Rowling’s work. Growing up, I was always the same age as Harry’s crew and I felt a special bond to him and his world. I knew I could never create something as world shattering at J.K. did, but I knew in the very least that I wanted my work to be in the same genre. I’ve also found out by trial and error that choosing to write about magic and sorcery is choosing to be free and chained at the same time. You can create anything you want, but you have to follow your own rules or the story doesn’t work. This genre can be unbelievably liberating and mind-bogglingly frustrating at the same time.

What do you do when you’re not writing?
Rock saxophone. I’ve been playing tenor saxophone for about fifteen years now, but I still have a lot to learn. I actually just moved to Austin, TX (the live music capital of the world) to try my hand at the music scene. Turns out that everyone here is amazing so it’s going to be rough.
Who is your favorite character from your book and why?
My favorite character is a young sorcerer named Glissandro Thicket. He’s a lanky, curly-haired sorcerer on the brink of adulthood. He was born without the ability to talk, but he somehow found a way to speak through playing music on his horn.
He’s based on a type of person that I feel like happens all too often. He’s talented, has a kind heart, plenty of wisdom, but because of certain life circumstances, he’s shy and lacks the self-esteem to shine as bright as he could.

If you were to go live on an island and could only choose 5 books to take with you, what would you choose?
· The Name of the Wind
· The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
· The Giver
· The Alchemist
· How to Build A Boat Using Nothing But Island Materials
If Masters of the Veil were made into a movie, who do you picture starring in it?
It’s funny that you should ask. I did a piece over at Fiktshun where I cast the main characters. You should check it out:
There’s even photos!
