Book review: The Gardener by S.A. Bodeen

My synopsis of The Gardener:
Mason is a young boy, age 15, who lives alone with his mother. Mason has never known his father. The only proof Mason has that his father even exists is a DVD where his father is being filmed, but it only shows him from the neck down. In the DVD Mason's father is reading from a story book for little children, the DVD is Masons most treasured belonging.

Masons mother she struggles to keep her job, she has a problem with alcohol and Mason have to make up excuses for her when she has been drinking. Their relationship has been turned upside down, Mason is the parent. One day after Masons mother has gone to work, he makes a discovery that throws some light on his mothers past, she has been hiding important stuff from him for years. When Mason shows up at the nursing home, where his mother works, he ends up by waking a girl from coma. She is scared, really scared and Mason knows he probably should leave her at the nursing home, but how can a hero keep from saving the most beautiful girl he has ever laid eyes on? Something happens at the nursing home and all of the sudden Mason finds himself on the run with a strange girl. When he helps the girl to bed on the first night he notices that she has some bad scares on her calves, what has been done to this girl?

My thoughts:
I loved the main character Mason from the first page. He is a big guy with an ugly scar on one side of his face, he knows how it is to be stared at, to be different but he uses it to his advantage. Mason has rescued other kids in trouble more than one time, the bullies fear him. He is one of the first characters I've come across(as far as I can remember) who isn't a reluctant hero and for that I loved him. Who wouldn't feel good if they could save someone else from trouble?

Mason suddenly finds himself in the middle of a horrible scientific experiment, scientist are trying to create humans who can survive on sunlight. In my opinion Bodeen's plot is original and horrible. One should think this is an experiement going on sometime in the distant future but in the book it is being referred to Al Gore and that tells me that we are operation in the present.
Al Gore gave them that award last year.

One can literary feel that this could  be happening right under our noses, scary thought.

The story floated very well until somewhere in the middle of the book, an introduction of a character somehow didn't sit very well with me. Despite my little problem I highly enjoyed this novel and the ending was just perfect. I might just have to look up Bodeen's first novel, The Compound, one day.

The cover:
I think the cover is eerie and dark and it fits perfectly to the story.

My rating:
4 out of 5 stars.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer

I know I'm going to the cinema when Voyage of the Dawn Treader hits the Norwegian cinemas. I will have to try and read the book before then, I have all the Narnia books in my shelf but so far I've only read the first one.

I love this trailer(and I must admit that I'm a little bit in love with Prince Caspian *blush*).

Rosebush by Michele Jaffe

This week's "Waiting On" Wednesday pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is :

Rosebush by Michele Jaffe . Release date December 14th 2010. Published by Razorbill.

I haven't read many young adult thrillers but the ones I've read I have enjoyed very much, Rosebush sounds like something I might enjoy.

What do you think of the cover? It is kind of creepy but good, I imagine that it might be an illustration of the the main character, Jane, or her best friend Bonnie.

Description from the Goodreads:
See Jane run. See Jane die.

Instead of celebrating Memorial Day weekend on the Jersey shore, Jane is in the hospital surrounded by teddy bears, trying to piece together what happened last night. One minute she was at a party, wearing fairy wings and cuddling with her boyfriend. The next, she was lying near-dead in a rosebush after a hit and run.

Everyone thinks it was an accident, despite the phone threats Jane swears were real. But the truth is a thorny thing. As Jane's boyfriend, friends, and admirers come to visit, more memories surface--not just from the party, but from deeper in her past...including the night her best friend Bonnie died.

With nearly everyone in her life a suspect now, Jane must unravel the mystery before her killer attacks again. Along the way, she is forced to examine the consequences of her life choices in this compulsively readable thriller.

Wuthering Heights(2009)

Just a short recommendation on this lovely Monday morning. You NEED to watch the 2009 adaptation of Emily Brönte's novel Wuthering Heights. It's beautiful!

I've actually never read the novel but after seeing this adaptation with my sister on Saturday I know that I absolutely have to read it. What a tragic love story, it is so beautiful and my heart broke many times while watching it. Two such passionate souls who loves each other dearly, but too much passion can be dangerous..

Here's a little taste:

Book review: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer

A short synopsis:
Bree Tanner were one of the newborns created by the evil, vampire Victoria. We met Bree for a brief moment in Stephanie Meyers Eclipse(the third installment in the Twilight saga). This book tells the readers Bree's story leading up to the battle and her death in Eclipse.

My thoughts:
To be honest I kind of lost my faith in Meyers vampire stories after pining myself through Breaking Dawn. Breaking Dawn was a huge let down for me so you can say my expectations about The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner was very low. I'm happy to announce that I was very pleasantly surprised with this novella.

The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is a rather dark story with real vampires(even though these vampires also sparkle ;)), blood and body parts flying all over the place. It's not all blood and gore, there is some wonderful friendships being made and even a little bit of love in the air. Bree and the rest of the vampire army knows very little about being vampires. Riley, the leader of Victorias vampire army, controls them by playing on their fears and ancient vampires myths. Bree feels so alone in this group but quite by coincidence she makes a friend in Riley's second in command, Diego. They both feel like there is something weird going on, still Bree is not sure Diego can be trusted. Perhaps he is just a spy, checking to see if some of the vampires are a little to smart for their own good?

When Bree is inside the vampire nest, she always keeps close to a vampire called Freaky Fred. Fred has the ability to make other people nauseous in his presence, so Bree is always left alone in her hiding place behind hos sofa. As time passes it might seem like Fred isn't such a creepy vampire after all. I just loved Fred's character and I wish that Meyer would write a story of Fred's life as well, it would be a great addition(spin-off) to the Twilight world.

Like we all do I knew how things would turn out for Bree, but Meyer kept me hoping that maybe, maybe Bree could be saved.

All in all an excellent read which I finished in no time.

The cover:
Just perfect. An illustration of how fast Bree's time disappears, how short her life is.

My rating of this book:

4.5 out of 5 stars.

Want a second opinion? Check out the reviews below written by some of my book blogging friends:

Jenny from Wondrous Reads:

In my fangirly conclusion, The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is a freakin' awesome addition to the Twilight Saga series
Carla from The Crooked Shelf(I just thought this quote was so fun, you will understand it even better after reading the book):

And, to be quite truthful, I can't be objective.  If I said I could, I would be a big liar, just like those damn Volturi *shakes fists* so i'm just going to babble a bit.  Okay?
Sarah from YA Vampire Books:
The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner is an indispensable read for Twilight lovers!

Hello world! E-reader advice?

First of all I have a question for those of you who have e-readers, which one would you chose if you could pick freely(and why)? My birthday is coming up in July and I think I want to buy one as a present to myself.

Secondly I would like to say hello to my new followers! I cannot believe that I have over 400 followers. That is just incredible.

Yesterday I delivered my exam, so that means no more evening classes for me. I'm so happy that I'm done! That means it is time for me to do some catching up around the blogosphere. Firstly I have to start out with my own blog. I have a couple of reviews to write(I have managed to read three four books while I was supposed to just study..).

Have a wonderful day everyone!

Native American Folk Tales in graphic form

Since I was in the mood for something new yesterday I asked my readers for recommendations for graphic novels and I got a little bunch of suggestions. Thank you very much :) A bit after I posted yesterday I was just searching around at random on Twitter and I discovered this: Native American Folk Tales Take A Graphic Turn. Check out the video in the link and listen to an excerpt of the Native American Tales: A Graphic Collection(Goodreads). The collection is edited by Matt Dembicki and published by Fulcrum Publishing(a new to me publisher). It looks like a brilliant collection. I've always be fascinated by Norwegian folk tales and would love to discover the tales of other cultures.

I remember my grandfather read to us from two large story books, both were collection of Norwegian folk tales collected by Norwegian authors Asbjørnsen and Moe. If you like folk tales I found a website where you can read some of the Norwegian ones if you like. It thought that was kind of neat so I wanted to share my findings.

Introduce me to graphic novels?

So far I've only ever read one graphic novel in my life. That was The Sandman: Prelude and Nocturnes by Neil Gaiman(if you haven't read it you can look inside it on Amazon). That was definitely not made for me, way to grotesque. It kind of put me out of wanting to read graphic novels altogether and I know that's not fair to all the other graphic novels out there. That's why I thought I might ask for some assistance; could you guys suggest some graphic novels for me to check out? I feel pretty confident that there has to exist something for me out there as well I just need an eye opener as to what is out there on the market.

I have to add that I found one myself today that I thought looked pretty cool. I found a graphic novel called The Sons of Liberty on Becky's blog Becky's Book Review she makes it sound good, doesn't she?

Would you like to read The Fiddler's Gun?

Some of you might remember that I ranted about a novel called The Fiddler's Gun by A.S. Peterson earlier this year? If you don't remember then please feel free to read my review(I also recommend the author interview). This is a great adventure story for both young adults and adults alike, you don't want to miss out on this great story about the orphan girl named Fin. There is drama, a little bit of love and piracy!

This book deserves to be read and that's why I thought I wanted to ask you my dear readers if you would like to be part of Escape In A Books' very first tour? I'm sending my copy of The Fiddler's Gun to travel the world. You have to agree on the following criteria to join in on this tour:
  • You have to have a blog. It doesn't have to be a blog where all the posts are written in English and it doesn't have to be a book blog but your review post have to be written in English.
  • You have to be willing to ship the book internationally.
  • You will have a week to read the book then you have to post it to the person next on the tour. It's not more than 293 pages so I think a week should be enough :)
  • Once the book has been mailed you have a week to write your review of the book. I will write another post later on where the link to your review must be posted.
Since this is a world wide tour I will do my utmost to arrange it so that the book won't have to travel across the world several times(that just unnecessary). Instead of doing it like this from Australia to USA and then to New Zealand and back to the USA again it will be done lit this AUS, NZ, USA, USA(mind you this is just an example).

Would you like to participate in this tour? Leave a comment with your email or email me at: escapeinabook[AT]hotmail[DOT]com

I'm not the first to do this both Alaine - Queen of happy endings & Amy from Romance Book Wyrm have done this already(and perhaps others have done this as well without my knowing of it?).

Right now - Pretty Bad Things

I'm over half way through the book and I'm thoroughly enjoying the main characters; bad-ass Paisley and her twin brother, Beau, who's Paisleys' opposite.
